For many years, the DeVos family has been a leader in the educational transformation movement. Through nonprofit means, the family, led by Dick DeVos has contributed millions of dollars to the education sector. Apart from education, DeVos has supported programs that try to improve the health sector in Michigan and other states that are in need of reforms. MLive estimates that the DeVos family donated over 90 million dollars to support the church plus faith-based organizations, health initiatives, the education sector, and arts and culture. The majority of the amount contributed went to support education according to the public IRS records.
In 1989, Dick DeVos and his wife started the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation to enable them to donate more to the community. According to Mr. DeVos, his heart of giving came from his parents who taught him on the importance of serving and helping those in need. Since then, he has remained faithful to those teachings.
Dick is a family man and together with his wife they have four children, and two granddaughters. Currently, Betsy and Dick are also involved in their respective business careers and full-time studies. Mr. DeVos is a graduate of Northwood University and Forest Hills Public Schools, which has given him his firm foundation in education.
After his education, Mr. DeVos began his career in Amway Corporation where he held various positions in various divisions of the organizations. His efforts saw him become the Vice President in 1984, where he oversaw the expansion of Amway into 18 countries beyond the United States and Canada. In 1991, Mr. Dick became the CEO and president of NBA’s Orlando Magic. In 1993, he returned to Amway as President and for the next nine years, under his leadership, the organization recorded high sales and profits. In his last year as president, the corporation reported sales of over 4 billion dollars.
I believe America needs people like Dick DeVos more than ever. DeVos sees helping as a calling and that is why he gives with so much passion. When I look at the bigger picture, I realize that it is philanthropy that has continued to make the United States freer, stronger, and happier. People like Dick DeVos and his family are vital to the success of a country.
The education sector in some parts of America still lags behind and the reforms that the DeVos family is pushing are badly needed. DeVos has made some changes by founding his own aviation academy in West Michigan. This is a charter school open to all students interested in a career in aviation. Dick is an avid pilot himself and he wanted to give people of all financial backgrounds the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
Mr. and Mrs. Devos continue to shape education, health, arts, and the church for a better society.
